Happy People Inspire Me!

I am currently reading a book on happiness and it has prompted much thought on the topic.  Since our focus this month is on inspiring people, I decided to write about “Happy People” because I find them to be very inspiring.  Who is the happiest person you know?  Can you think of more than one?  I have to admit, I had to stop and think  for a few minutes about my answer to this question.  Three people came to mind, two of them are no longer with me and one I am blessed to live with each and every day!

The first is my Dad, who was known for his belly laugh and overall cheery disposition.  He had one of those laughs that could be heard across the room.  He was always whistling a tune and hearing that happy sound is one of my fondest memories of my Dad.  Later, when he fought the battle for his life against cancer, he continued to be an inspiration.  He faced his illness with grace, courage and optimism until the very end.

The second person on my list was my Dad’s sister, my Aunt Margaret.  Aunt Margaret was one of the most kind-hearted, cheerful people I have ever met.  As she got older, she dealt with severe back pain, but she was always upbeat and faced life with a smile.  We lost my Aunt Margaret in a car accident five years ago, but her happy, generous, and cheerful ways will always be remembered.

The final person who tops my “Happy List” is my youngest daughter.  My brother calls her “Miss Susie Sunshine”.  What can I say, the girl knows how to have a good time and finds  joy in most everything she does!  She is rarely in a bad mood and if she is, I can easily coax her out of it and soon she is all smiles again.  For a girl that spent the first three years of her life in an orphanage, her spunky, happy, spirit never ceases to amaze me!

These three special people all have something in common, they are or were happy, despite their circumstances.  I think we could all learn a lot from genuinely happy people.  If you really study them, you will realize it is not outer circumstances or “things” that make them happy, they carry an inner peace and joy that radiates through their whole being.  If you look at their eyes, you can usually see a special sparkle and when you hear them laugh, you can’t help but smile.

So the question comes to mind, were they just born that way or is it something else?  The answer probably lies somewhere in between, I think some people are born optimists, looking on the bright side of things and finding fun and laughter in life comes easily to them.  The rest of us have to try a little harder to find our “happy” in life.  It may take a little work on our part, but I think it can be done and is well worth the effort!

One of my favorite Bible verses speaks to this idea of finding contentment despite our circumstances:

Philippians 4:11-12

New International Version (NIV)

“11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”

The three people I mentioned above had or have an unwavering faith in God.  Knowing God is always with us and  loved us enough to send His Son die on the cross for us, can fill us with a peace, joy and happiness that will never leave us, no matter what we are going through in our lives.

I challenge you to seek out the happy people in your life.  Spend time with them, observe them, emulate their behaviors and maybe you will see your own level of happiness increase!

  1. You hit the nail on the head perfectly with these 3 people. I still think, when we’re all gathered together with our family, Uncle Bob and Aunt Margaret are right there with us. I think I can almost hear that belly laugh. And Liza. What a pure joy she is. She must have had wonderful caregivers those first three years in the orphanage to develop that unending happiness she always has. Of course we know why she has it since she came here to her forever family!
